-- Hello and Happy New Year! Today is January 1, 2016, and my goal for 2015 was to learn German. I used Duolingo for this endeavor, a free website that incorporates a "streak" counter for every day you spend practicing a language. While I am happy to say that I ended the year with a streak of 278 days, I am also sad that I missed a day in late March which reset my streak at that time to zero. Nevertheless I am very happy with the amount of time that I spent on Duolingo this past year. As mentioned on my resolutions page, my goal for 2016 is to focus on learning Italian. While I do not plan to abandon German, I would prefer to spend 2016 learning the language that my family speaks. What I am beginning to learn about language learning is that languages provide us with the opportunity to communicate and connect with more people. Bill Nye once said that, "Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't.". As the days go by, this statement is something I continue to remind myself of. I believe that by learning as many languages as we can, we are allowing ourselves to communicate and learn from as many people as possible. If anyone reading this has any interest in learning a language, whether it be as a personal challenge, in order to speak with friends or family, or simply to brush up on some forgotten skills, I highly recommend Duolingo. |
